Over 200 civilians freed in DR Congo rescue operation

More than 200 civilians have been rescued in a joint military operation targeting an Islamic State-linked armed group in eastern Democratic Republic of the Congo. The operation was carried out by Ugandan forces working alongside Congolese troops against the Allied Democratic Forces, known as ADF.

The Ugandan military says the raid targeted a camp used by the group, leading to the rescue of men, women and children, including a 14-year-old girl. Several fighters were killed during the operation, and weapons were also recovered.

Officials say the rescued civilians described harsh conditions in captivity, including forced labour, starvation and illness. The joint forces say the operation is part of ongoing efforts launched in 2021 to dismantle ADF strongholds in the region.
