Over 400 Terrorism Suspects Face Mass Trial in Abuja

The Attorney-General of the Federation and Minister of Justice, Lateef Fagbemi, says the federal government is not treating insecurity with levity as mass trials of terrorism suspects continue in Abuja.

Fagbemi gave the assurance on Monday while addressing journalists at the Federal High Court in Abuja, where more than 400 suspects were being arraigned across multiple courtrooms on charges including terrorism, terrorism financing, and aiding insurgent activities.

He said the current administration was sending a clear message that terrorism in any form would not be tolerated, adding that about 490 suspects were being tried on Monday, while 84 others were scheduled for arraignment on Tuesday. He said more than 600 suspects were involved in the current phase of proceedings.

The Attorney-General added that 10 judges had been assigned to handle the terrorism trials over a four-day period, with support from the Director of Public Prosecutions of the Federation, Rotimi Oyedepo, and legal representation provided for indigent defendants by the Legal Aid Council of Nigeria.
