Rights Groups Call For UN Action Over Sudan Crisis

UN Resident Coordinator Calls for Immediate Release of Abducted School Children and Teachers in Oyo and Borno

Thirty-eight international aid and human rights organisations have called for urgent international action to prevent what they describe as possible atrocities in the Sudanese city of el-Obeid. In an open letter released on Friday, the groups urged the United Nations Human Rights Council to convene an emergency debate and strengthen efforts to ensure accountability.

The organisations, including Amnesty International and Human Rights Watch, warned that el-Obeid, in Sudan’s South Kordofan region, faces the risk of an imminent ground offensive by the Rapid Support Forces, or RSF, and allied fighters. The city has been surrounded by the paramilitary group for months during the conflict with the Sudanese army, which began in April 2023.

The groups also called for an independent UN fact-finding mission and urged countries to condemn external actors supporting the warring parties. They specifically named the United Arab Emirates, which Sudan has repeatedly accused of supplying arms to the RSF. The UAE denies the allegations.

According to the United Nations, the war in Sudan has killed tens of thousands of people and displaced more than 12 million others. The Human Rights Council’s current session is due to end on 7 July.
