Sierra Leone’s Maada Bio Named New ECOWAS Chairman as Tinubu’s Tenure Ends

President Julius Maada Bio of Sierra Leone has been appointed Chairman of the Economic Community of West African States, ECOWAS, Authority of Heads of State and Government, succeeding President Bola Tinubu at the bloc’s 67th Ordinary Session in Abuja.

President Tinubu’s year-long leadership, renewed once in 2024, concluded at the summit despite earlier speculation that Senegal’s President Bassirou Diomaye Faye had secured the role during pre-session deliberations.

In his acceptance remarks, President Bio pledged to focus on restoring constitutional order, strengthening democracy, deepening regional security, boosting economic integration, and enhancing ECOWAS’s institutional credibility.

His leadership comes at a time of political fragility and economic strain across West Africa.

President Tinubu was first elected ECOWAS Chair in Guinea-Bissau in July 2023 and reappointed a year later, with member states citing the need for policy continuity on security and regional development.
