Supreme Court Strikes Out Governors’ Suit on Recovered Funds

The Supreme Court has dismissed a suit filed by all 36 states and the Nigeria Governors’ Forum challenging the Federal Government’s handling of recovered looted assets.

Delivering the lead judgment, Justice Mohammed Idris ruled that the apex court lacks jurisdiction to hear the matter, noting that it falls under the purview of the Federal High Court.

The states had accused the federal government of diverting over ₦1.8 trillion and numerous seized assets to unauthorised accounts instead of remitting them into the Federation Account as stipulated by the constitution.

The governors sought a court order compelling the federal government to remit all recovered funds and assets since 2015 into the Federation Account. However, the case, which named the EFCC, ICPC, police and attorney general’s office, was struck out on Friday.
