British Prime Minister Keir Starmer has announced that he will resign as leader of the Labour Party, paving the way for a new prime minister to take office before Parliament reconvenes in September.
Starmer made the announcement outside 10 Downing Street on Monday, saying he accepted his party’s verdict on his leadership and would step down after concluding he was no longer best placed to lead Labour into the next general election.
He said he had informed King Charles III of his decision and confirmed that the Labour Party’s National Executive Committee will set a timetable for a leadership contest, with nominations expected to open on July 9.
Starmer added that he would remain in office until a smooth transition is completed, while expressing gratitude to his family, colleagues, and staff, and saying he now intends to focus on his family life after leaving office.
