The government of the United Kingdom has imposed sanctions on Russian-linked networks accused of recruiting Nigerians and other vulnerable migrants to fight in the war in Ukraine.
In a statement, the UK Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office said the sanctions target individuals and entities allegedly involved in moving recruits from countries including Nigeria, Egypt, Morocco and Syria to Russia before deployment to the frontlines with minimal training.
British authorities identified Polina Alexandrovna Azarnykh among those sanctioned, accusing her of facilitating the travel of foreign recruits. The measures also target networks linked to Russia’s drone manufacturing and military supply chains.

The announcement follows reports that some Nigerians were lured to Russia with promises of civilian jobs before allegedly being recruited into the conflict. The UK said a total of 35 individuals and organisations were sanctioned as part of efforts to disrupt support for Russia’s war operations.
