Iran says a deal to reopen the Strait of Hormuz is now in its — quote — “final stage.” Iran’s Foreign Ministry spokesperson, Esmail Baghaei, said on Wednesday that negotiators have finalised a draft agreement with Oman on reopening the critical waterway, though it still needs final sign-off from Iran’s Supreme Leader Ayatollah Mojtaba Khamenei, who has not appeared in public since the strikes that killed his father.
President Trump says an announcement could come as soon as this week. Speaking to reporters on Tuesday, the President said — quote — “A lot of progress has been made.”
The deal is expected to require the U.S. to lift its blockade on Iranian ports, something Washington has so far resisted.
Oil prices edged lower on Thursday, with global benchmark Brent crude down by 0.3% at $79.82 (£58.84) from $80 on Wednesday.
