Nigeria to Build Buffer Dam in Adamawa to Prevent Floods

The Federal Government says it is planning the construction of the Datsin Hausa Dam in Adamawa State to help mitigate annual flooding caused by water releases from Cameroon’s Lagdo Dam. The Minister of Water Resources and Sanitation, Engr Prof. Joseph Terlumun Utsev, disclosed this during the 2025 Ministerial Press Briefing.

According to the minister, a study and design for the dam have been completed, and the ministry is in the process of procuring a transaction adviser to facilitate the construction phase. He emphasised the national impact of the flooding, noting that the dam would serve as a buffer to reduce the scale of water overflow from the Lagdo Dam.

Professor Utsev said the proposed dam would support irrigation across vast lands in the area, provide water supply, and contribute to hydropower development. He also revealed that the government had approved funding for the reconstruction of the Alau Dam in Borno State, which was damaged and resulted in the loss of lives and property.
