A passenger boat travelling from Garoua, Cameroon to Yola, Adamawa State capsized in Cameroonian waters late Monday, killing at least 20 people, 18 of them identified as Nigerians.
Witnesses said the vessel, carrying more than 50 passengers alongside iron rods and construction materials bound for Dasin community in Fufore Local Government Area, departed despite residents’ warnings to wait until daylight due to worsening weather. It capsized after encountering a violent storm around midnight.
Eighteen recovered bodies have been buried in Wuro Bokki, Fufore LGA, while search and rescue teams from Nigeria and Cameroon continue searching for remaining victims. Some survivors are receiving treatment in hospitals along the border. Authorities in both countries are expected to investigate the vessel’s departure despite the weather warnings.
