The Inspector General of Police, Kayode Egbetokun, arrived in Benue State on Monday following a wave of violent attacks by suspected herdsmen that left scores dead and hundreds displaced. The most recent incident occurred last Friday, when armed assailants stormed communities, killing dozens and destroying properties.
Benue, located in Nigeria’s North Central region, has long been a flashpoint for violent clashes, often linked to disputes between farming communities and nomadic herders. The state has suffered recurring violence over the years, with attacks escalating in intensity and frequency in recent months.

In the past few weeks alone, over 160 people have been confirmed killed in separate attacks across several local government areas. The most recent raid in Yelewata community was particularly brutal, claiming the lives of civilians as well as military and civil defence personnel.
The IGP’s visit is expected to assess the security situation on the ground and offer assurances of federal support. His presence follows growing public concern over the lack of prompt and decisive action to address the ongoing violence in one of Nigeria’s key food-producing regions.
