The Chief of Army Staff, Lieutenant General Waidi Shaibu, says Nigeria has deployed troops to the Benin Republic as part of efforts to combat terrorism and transnational crimes in the West African sub-region.
Speaking at the Chief of Army Staff Annual Conference in Abuja, General Shaibu said the deployment is aimed at strengthening regional security cooperation and denying criminal and terrorist groups freedom of operation across neighbouring countries.
He said the Nigerian Army remains committed to intelligence sharing, strategic partnerships and multinational collaboration, while urging commanders to remain adaptive and focused in ongoing security operations. He also commended President Bola Tinubu for supporting the military through improved welfare, infrastructure and operational capacity.

General Shaibu said the army would continue to strengthen civil-military cooperation and support peace-building efforts in host communities. The deployment follows approval by the Senate in December for Nigerian troops to participate in a regional peace-stabilisation mission in the Benin Republic after an attempted coup in the country.
