Osun governor Ademola Adeleke came under gun attack in Osogbo on Wednesday, shortly after he received his certificate of return from INEC.
The attack happened outside the palace of the Ataoja of Osogbo, as the governor’s convoy left after a visit to the monarch. Witnesses say gunmen arrived in an unregistered bus and opened fire. Shooting lasted about fifteen minutes before the attackers fled.
Osun State Police spokesperson Abiodun Ojelabi said the target was Afrobeats star Davido, the governor’s nephew, who was in the convoy. They named a suspect linked to a cult group, who they say tried to force his way to Davido before the shooting began.
Davido has denied any link. On social media, he said the clash had nothing to do with him or the governor.
Police say investigations are ongoing and are appealing for information from the public.
