APC Candidate Wins Nasarawa North Senatorial By-Election With Over 45,000 Votes

The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has declared Danladi Envulu Anza of the All Progressives Congress (APC) winner of the by-election for Nasarawa North Senatorial District, following Saturday’s poll to fill the vacancy created by the death of Senator Godiya Akwashiki. Returning Officer Professor Aminu Ali announced the result at the collation centre at the College of Education in Akwanga on Sunday. According to the final results, Envulu Anza polled 45,362 votes to defeat five other candidates in the race. Labaran Maku, former minister of information and candidate of the Labour Party, came second with over 12,900 votes.

David Ombugadu of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) secured 11,570 votes, while Alaku Ahmed of the African Democratic Congress came in 4th place, Duba Dodo of the Nigeria Democratic Congress in 5th place, and John Paul Araneshri of the New Nigeria Peoples Party in 6th place. The election was held across Akwanga, Nasarawa Eggon, and Wamba Local Government Areas, which make up the Nasarawa North Senatorial District. The returning officer declared that the APC candidate satisfied all legal requirements to be returned elected.

The election was concluded without major incidents. The results were announced after collation from the various polling units across the three local government areas.

The APC candidate’s victory extends the party’s representation in the Senate. The opposition parties have not yet indicated whether they will challenge the outcome of the election, while INEC has since issued the certificate of return to the winner.
