Nigeria’s resident doctors say a planned nationwide strike, set for August 10, may be averted after a three-hour meeting with Chief of Staff Femi Gbajabiamila at the Presidential Villa.
NARD President Muhammad Suleiman said the talks produced concrete commitments on salaries, promotions, allowances and doctor-safety measures, but stopped short of confirming the strike is officially called off. “I can’t stand here and tell you I have called off a strike,” he said, adding the decision rests with NARD’s National Executive Council.
Gbajabiamila reportedly pledged legislation making assaults on health workers an aggravated offence, after NARD cited 31 doctors and over 20 other health workers assaulted in the past ten months. Officials also agreed to timely house officer salary payments and faster collective bargaining negotiations ahead of the 2027 budget cycle.
