Oyo Authorities Deny Reports of Kidnap Victims' Release, Say Captives Still in Custody

The Oorelope Local Government Chairman and the Oyo State Police Command have refuted claims that victims abducted in Igbope have regained their freedom, following a viral video showing celebrations after activist Sunday Igboho issued a two-hour ultimatum for their release. Chairman Jacob Ogundiran described the reports as false and misleading, confirming that the victims remain in captivity and urging the public to disregard the rumours. Police spokesperson DSP Olayinka Ayanlade also dismissed the claims, stating that efforts are ongoing to rescue the victims and that the kidnapping occurred in Igbope, not Igboho.

Gunmen had abducted members of a family during a midnight attack, initially demanding N300 million ransom before reducing it to N150 million. Following the incident, Igboho issued a stern warning to Fulani community leaders over rising cases of kidnapping, expressing anger over alleged killings and abductions in the area. He accused some members of the Fulani community of kidnapping residents and referenced incidents involving a pregnant woman and ransom negotiations that reportedly turned deadly.

Igboho also issued a two-hour ultimatum for the release of other abducted victims, stressing that he had shown restraint following appeals from traditional rulers. He further warned that failure to comply would trigger decisive action, including threats of entering suspected hideouts linked to the kidnappings. Following the ultimatum, videos from the community showed jubilant residents celebrating what was described as the release of the abducted family.

However, both local and state authorities have now debunked these claims. Ogundiran assured that security agencies at the state and local levels are intensifying efforts to secure the victims’ safe rescue, while commending community leaders and residents for providing intelligence and support.
