Enekwechi wins historic shot put gold for Nigeria at Commonwealth Games

Nigeria’s Chukwuebuka Enekwechi has won gold in the men’s shot put at the Glasgow 2026 Commonwealth Games, becoming the first Nigerian to claim the event’s title at the Games. Enekwechi produced a winning throw of 21.07 metres on his penultimate attempt at Scotstoun Stadium.

Defending champion Tom Walsh of New Zealand finished second with 21.03 metres, while England’s Scott Lincoln took bronze with 20.99 metres.

The victory improves on Enekwechi’s silver medal at the 2018 Commonwealth Games and his fourth-place finish in Birmingham four years ago. The 33-year-old had qualified for the final with a single automatic-qualifying throw of 20.03 metres.

Enekwechi’s victory also increased Nigeria’s medal haul at Glasgow 2026 to 15, comprising eight gold, five silver and two bronze medals.
