FG launches committee to strengthen agriculture exports

The Federal Government has inaugurated an Inter-ministerial Committee on the Nigerian Agricultural Quarantine Service to address the rejection of Nigerian agricultural exports and strengthen the country’s biosecurity system. The committee was inaugurated in Abuja as part of efforts to improve compliance with international standards and boost non-oil exports.

Permanent Secretary in the Ministry of Budget and Economic Planning, Deborah Odoh, said Nigeria could no longer afford the losses resulting from export rejections. She said the committee would improve policy coordination, harmonise regulatory processes and align the country’s agricultural quarantine system with global best practices.

The committee includes representatives of key ministries, the Nigeria Customs Service, the Nigerian Agricultural Quarantine Service and other stakeholders. Its mandate includes reviewing NAQS operations, recommending sustainable funding, improving laboratory capacity and enhancing compliance with international sanitary and phytosanitary standards.
