Nigeria recorded 650 building collapses, over 1,600 deaths in 52 years - Minister

Nigeria has recorded more than 650 building collapses and over 1,600 deaths in the past 52 years, according to the Minister of Housing and Urban Development, Muttaqha Darma.

The minister disclosed the figures at a stakeholders’ workshop in Abuja on the regulation of the built environment. He said the incidents, recorded since 1974, showed the need for stronger oversight of the construction sector.

Darma said many collapsed buildings had designers, builders and approving officers, but added that licensing and accountability had often been lacking. He announced plans for a National Housing and Built Environment Regulation Policy to strengthen standards, improve enforcement and regulate developers and professionals in the sector. The minister said the government would also establish a regulatory commission for the housing industry.
