The National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control, NAFDAC, says it is severely understaffed, with about 2,000 employees serving a population of more than 230 million Nigerians.
Director-General Professor Mojisola Adeyeye said the agency should ideally have at least 10,000 personnel to effectively regulate the country’s food, drugs and other regulated products.
Speaking in Lagos, she said NAFDAC was not seeking to immediately recruit all 10,000 workers, but wanted its workforce doubled or tripled. Adeyeye said the shortage was placing heavy pressure on existing staff, who are working to safeguard public health.
She outlined five priorities for the agency, including stronger governance, product safety and quality, maternal and child health, institutional best practices and monitoring of the supply chain.
