House Republicans adopt $95bn package for Iran war, others

House Speaker Mike Johnson is pushing a Republican-only $95 billion budget package to fund the Iran war and other White House priorities, using the reconciliation process for the third time this session to bypass Democratic votes.

The package includes $60 billion for the Pentagon, $13 billion for other national security needs, $12 billion for farmers hurt by tariffs, and $10 billion for voter ID law changes. Some conservatives, including independent Rep. Kevin Kiley, oppose it over the lack of offsetting budget cuts and insufficient congressional oversight of the war’s end.

The push comes as Trump attended a dignified transfer for four more service members killed in the Middle East, bringing the military death toll to 18, and as Defence Secretary Hegseth told senators the Pentagon is running short of cash. Polling shows most Americans disapprove of Trump’s Iran strategy.
