Nigeria’s Civil Defence Corps has uncovered a suspected fake university operating from a three-bedroom apartment in Badagry, Lagos State, rescuing 106 young people lured by promises of foreign university admission.
NSCDC’s Badagry Area Command raided the apartment in Ilado early Monday, following days of surveillance, and arrested the alleged proprietor. The operation had no official registration, signboard or campus, yet presented itself online as a foreign-affiliated distance-learning centre.
Victims, mostly aged 19 to 24, came from across Nigeria and neighbouring countries including Niger, Cameroon and Togo, paying between ₦200,000 and ₦1.5 million, or $400 to $500 for foreigners. Investigators say the scheme operated like a Ponzi structure, rewarding participants for recruiting new victims.
Area Commander Gbenga Ekunola said many parents were unaware, and rescued youths will be profiled and reunited with families once investigations conclude.
