Iran demands $270bn compensation for US-Israel conflict

Iran has demanded compensation for damage it says was caused by United States and Israeli military attacks, as fresh talks with Washington are expected to take place. Tehran’s envoy to the United Nations said five regional countries should also pay compensation, alleging their territory was used to launch attacks on Iran.

Iranian government figures estimate that the country has suffered about $270 billion in direct and indirect losses since the conflict began on 28 February. The government says the damages include destruction of oil and gas facilities, petrochemical plants, steel and aluminium factories, as well as military infrastructure.

Authorities say bridges, ports, railways, universities, research centres, power stations and water plants have also been affected, alongside hospitals, schools and residential buildings. Officials say the country is still assessing the full extent of the damage and that rebuilding will take years.

Despite the scale of destruction, Iranian officials say they will continue negotiations with the United States through regional mediators, but insist compensation will remain a key demand in any future talks.
