The Kano State Government has declared Thursday a public holiday to mark the start of the Islamic New Year, 1447 AH.
In a statement signed by the Commissioner for Information and Internal Affairs, Ibrahim Waiya, the government said the holiday is to honour the sacred significance of Muharram, the first month of the Islamic lunar calendar.
Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf congratulated the Muslim faithful and urged reflection on the past year’s deeds. He encouraged residents to offer prayers for peace, unity, and national prosperity.

The governor also used the occasion to reaffirm his administration’s commitment to people-centred governance, pledging continued efforts to improve living standards across the state.
The Islamic New Year is traditionally observed with spiritual reflection and renewed personal and communal purpose by Muslims around the world.
