Several people are feared dead after armed attackers invaded at least six communities in Ukum Local Government Area of Benue State early Sunday morning. Residents say gunmen on motorcycles stormed Ayaba, Ukpen, Bom, Ikpur, Aboajio and Yina in Mbaterem ward around 4:30 am, shooting sporadically and forcing residents to flee into the bush.
Casualty figures remain unconfirmed and vary by source. Ukum LGA Chairman Jonathan Modi said security operatives responded promptly and were still recovering bodies and evacuating the wounded as of Sunday evening.
Governor Hyacinth Alia condemned the attack, blaming armed herders. He has vowed continued support for security agencies, declaring “Benue lands for Benue people.” Police confirmed the attack but said details are still being gathered.
