Benue imposes dusk-to-dawn curfew

Authorities in Otukpo Local Government Area of Benue State have imposed a dusk-to-dawn curfew following a deadly attack on the Efeyi Ugboju community.

The curfew, announced by council chairman Maxwell Ogiri, runs from 7 p.m. to 6 a.m. daily and follows protests by angry youths over the killings. Vanguard reports that more than 22 people were killed in the attack, while security personnel have been deployed to strategic locations, including the palace of the Och’Idoma. Ogiri said the measure was introduced to prevent a breakdown of law and order and restore calm amid concerns that protesters could take the victims’ bodies to the traditional ruler’s palace. Police said the attack involved suspected armed bandits who allegedly invaded the community in connection with cattle rustling. The investigation and security response are ongoing.
