The Supreme Council for Shariah in Nigeria has urged the National Assembly not to rush constitutional amendments aimed at creating state police.
The council, in a statement by its Secretary General, Nafiu Baba Ahmad, called for broader consultation and national consensus, saying the proposal requires careful consideration because of its implications for security and governance. It warned that, without adequate constitutional safeguards, state police could become instruments of political intimidation, discrimination or abuse by state governments.
The council also commended lawmakers who resisted efforts to fast-track the amendment, describing their stance as a demonstration of democratic responsibility and due process.
The intervention comes as debate continues over whether state police would improve security or create new challenges. The National Assembly is considering constitutional amendments as part of ongoing efforts to reform Nigeria’s policing and security architecture.
