Emergency responders are continuing search and rescue operations after a two-storey building collapsed on Baale Street in the Ajuwon area of Ifo Local Government Area, Ogun State. The building, which housed shops and residential apartments, caved in during heavy rainfall. As of the latest official update, authorities had not confirmed casualties or the number of people trapped.
The National Emergency Management Agency says occupants had noticed structural cracks before the collapse but failed to report them. NEMA’s South-West Zonal Director, Akiode Saheed, said the warning signs could have prompted an official structural assessment and possible evacuation if reported in time.
The Ogun State Government has ordered an investigation into the collapse. Governor Dapo Abiodun says anyone found to have breached building regulations or compromised construction standards will be prosecuted, while rescue efforts continue at the scene.
