The Nigerian sporting community is mourning the death of Oluwabukola Pereira, who was shot dead in the United States days before her graduation ceremony.
The 30-year-old athlete was reportedly killed on 8 May during an apparent robbery at Arise Auto Center in Lockland, Ohio, where she worked. Local authorities say the Hamilton County Sheriff’s Office is investigating the incident, although no official motive has been confirmed.
Pereira was due to graduate from Xavier University on 16 May with a Master of Business Administration degree and had also secured admission for a postgraduate programme in Business Analytics later this year. She was also a member of Cincinnati’s Elite running group and had participated in several races, including the Flying Pig Marathon.

Police say the suspect is believed to be a man aged between 25 and 35, described as Black or Hispanic, with braided or dreadlocked hair, who was last seen running towards the Gardner Park area. Authorities have appealed for information from the public as investigations continue.
