Ogun State Bans Graduation Ceremonies in All Public and Private Schools Over Financial Burden

The Ogun State Government has banned graduation ceremonies and end-of-session parties in all public and private schools, citing the financial burden such activities impose on parents and guardians, according to a circular issued by the state Ministry of Education, Science and Technology.

The directive, signed by the Director of Education for Private Schools, A.A. Bisiriyu, affects all classes and orders immediate compliance, with schools that violate the directive facing sanctions. The ministry said the decision followed reports of school administrators compelling parents to pay various fees under the guise of organising graduation ceremonies, a practice that contravenes resolutions reached at the September 2025 stakeholders’ meeting.

The government directed school administrators to publicise the directive widely among parents, teachers, and stakeholders to ensure full compliance.

The directive comes as schools across the state near the end of the 2025 to 2026 academic session, and follows a late 2025 ban on graduation ceremonies for pre-basic and kindergarten pupils, restricting such events to students completing Primary Six, JSS3, and SS3. Other states, including Ekiti, Imo, Edo, Ebonyi, and Benue, have introduced similar bans to ease financial pressures on parents and curb exploitative practices by school proprietors. The ministry warned that any school found flouting the directive would be sanctioned in accordance with applicable regulations.
