The Ogun State Government has begun a major environmental cleanup in Ogijo following concerns over lead contamination linked to used lead-acid battery recycling activities.
The remediation exercise, coordinated by the Ogun State Environmental Protection Agency, includes the evacuation of illegally dumped battery slag, biological treatment of contaminated soil and stricter monitoring of recycling facilities. Officials said the intervention followed environmental assessments, including soil, water, air and blood tests conducted in the affected community.
OGEPA said the cleanup is intended to eliminate sources of lead contamination and protect residents, especially children and pregnant women, from further exposure.
The agency also directed battery recycling companies to upgrade their operations and comply with revised environmental standards. Authorities say monitoring and enforcement will continue to prevent future pollution and safeguard public health.
