The Manufacturers Association of Nigeria has urged the Lagos State Government to reconsider its planned ban on single-use plastics, set to take effect in July. In a statement, the association’s Director-General, Segun Ajayi-Kadir, said the move is not supported by credible data and fails to reflect current economic realities.
He argued that the decision lacked proper consultation and dismissed claims of health and environmental impacts as unsubstantiated. Ajayi-Kadir pointed to the National Plastic Action Roadmap and the draft National Plastic Waste Control Regulation, which he said offer more comprehensive, evidence-based strategies.

The DG criticised Lagos state’ policy development process as exclusionary, saying it overlooked previous stakeholder engagement and failed to consider industry perspectives. He warned that banning plastics without addressing Nigeria’s poor waste collection infrastructure would do little to curb pollution.
MAN is recommending a shift toward circular economy practices and context-driven policies. It called for stronger government support for local alternatives, improved infrastructure, and greater collaboration with manufacturers, traders, and waste managers in future policymaking.
