Shehu Sani Accuses Opposition Leaders of Selfishness

Former senator and human rights activist, Shehu Sani, says recent opposition activities and criticisms of President Bola Tinubu’s administration are driven by personal frustration and failed political ambitions, not public interest. He said many opposition figures are “disgruntled elements” who were once part of the same establishment they now criticise.

Speaking on a TV interview, Sani argued there are no true ideological divides between the ruling party and opposition, describing both camps as members of the same political elite. He said they use national challenges as a political tool, but many have held power since 1999.

The former lawmaker also criticised efforts by former Vice President Atiku Abubakar to form a coalition against President Tinubu ahead of 2027, warning that such alliances are often based on exclusion from power rather than national interest. Atiku has recently met with political figures including Peter Obi and Nasir El-Rufai.

Sani said it is wrong for opposition parties to blame the president for their internal disputes, arguing that parties must take responsibility for resolving their own crises. He added that expecting the president to mediate issues in rival camps is both unrealistic and irresponsible.
