Tunde Onakoya Defends Visit to Tinubu, Calls It ‘Not Political’

Nigerian chess advocate and founder of Chess in Slums Africa, Tunde Onakoya, has defended his recent visit to President Bola Tinubu in Lagos, stressing that the meeting was “not political” and should not be seen as an endorsement of the Nigerian leader. Onakoya, who recently set a Guinness World Record for the longest chess marathon, faced criticism after photos of the visit surfaced on social media.

In a statement posted on his X handle on Wednesday, the 29-year-old said meeting the president was not a crime, adding that he remains focused on supporting underserved children.

Onakoya stated that the visit offered an opportunity to share his vision of establishing the world’s largest Chess/STEM institute. “A visit is not an endorsement. I will visit many more people and will continue to sell my chessboards,” he added.

Responding to the criticisms, Onakoya rejected claims that his initiative only thrives due to governance failures, highlighting ongoing partnerships with the Lagos State government. Comedian Macaroni, known for his criticism of the government, expressed support for Onakoya’s efforts, urging Nigerians to appreciate his contributions.
