WHO Condemns Deadly Attack on Hospital in Sudan

The World Health Organization has condemned an attack on Al-Mujlad Hospital in West Kordofan, Sudan, which killed more than 40 people, including six children and five medical workers. The strike occurred on Saturday near active frontlines in the country’s ongoing civil war, now in its third year.

Civil society groups and the Rapid Support Forces have blamed the Sudanese Armed Forces for the attack, alleging it was an attempt to target RSF fighters reportedly stationed within the hospital. The Sudanese army has yet to respond to the accusations, while the RSF has not addressed claims that its fighters were present inside the facility.

The WHO described the hospital as the only functioning healthcare centre in the area and highlighted its critical dialysis services for civilians. The United Nations has called Sudan’s conflict the world’s worst humanitarian crisis, with widespread displacement, thousands of civilian deaths, and both sides accused of war crimes.

UNICEF chief Catherine Russell has warned of a worsening crisis for children, particularly those who have fled to neighbouring Chad. She said many children are malnourished, out of school, and vulnerable to exploitation and disease, noting reports of severe trauma and sexual violence, even against infants.
