Nigeria’s Ruth Asuquo Nyong won silver in the women’s 48kg weightlifting event at the 2026 Commonwealth Games in Glasgow, lifting a combined 168kg to extend Nigeria’s medal haul to seven.
The 20-year-old opened with a 75kg snatch, placing third behind India’s Mirabai Chanu Saikhom (85kg) and Malaysia’s Irene Jane Henry (77kg), before a decisive 93kg clean and jerk lifted her past Henry by one kilogram into second place. Saikhom claimed gold with a Games-record 190kg total, her third consecutive Commonwealth title in the category.
All seven of Nigeria’s medals so far — three gold, four silver — have come from weightlifting and para-powerlifting events. The Nigeria Weightlifting Federation praised Nyong’s performance as a reward for months of preparation.
Nigeria’s men’s 3×3 basketball team lost 21-16 to hosts Scotland earlier Sunday, dropping to 1-3 in the group stage.
