The first batch of Team Nigeria’s Commonwealth Games contingent has departed its training camp in Aberdeen, Scotland, for Glasgow, three days before the Games begin.
A second batch moves into the Games Village on Friday, July 24. Sprinter Favour Ashe praised the National Sports Commission for paying allowances in full ahead of the Games and providing world-class facilities, allowing athletes to focus solely on preparation.
World record holder Tobi Amusan, who joined the Aberdeen camp last week, headlines Nigeria’s medal hopes as she targets a third consecutive Commonwealth 100m hurdles title, having already qualified for the Diamond League final in Brussels and clocked a season’s best of 12.28 seconds three times this year.
Nigeria’s preparations suffered a setback with defending long jump champion Ese Brume’s withdrawal through injury, ending her bid to defend the Games record leap of 7.00m she set in 2022. Ruth Usoro has been drafted into the squad in her place, competing alongside Prestina Ochonogor in the women’s long jump.
The 2026 Commonwealth Games run from July 23 to August 2 in Glasgow.
