Bandits abduct more than 40 people in Zamfara

Armed bandits abducted more than 40 residents, mostly women and children, during coordinated raids on 11 communities in Zamfara State’s Maru Local Government Area over the weekend.

Resident Alhaji Lauwali Abdullahi said the attacks, blamed on bandit leader Kachalla Sa’idu, struck villages including Tashar Mayanchi, Gwargawo, Jidda and Garagi. He said the violence escalated after villagers resisted an earlier raid on Garagi, killing one bandit and seizing his rifle — prompting Sa’idu to threaten further attacks and to kill captives unless the weapon was returned.

Maru LGA Chairman Bello Jabaka confirmed the abductions, saying local authorities are working with security agencies to restore order. Mayanchi District links Zamfara to Niger Republic, Kebbi and Niger states, an area long plagued by banditry.
