Police top ICPC list of fake workers on payroll

Nigeria’s anti-graft agency says it uncovered 908 fake workers across more than 50 federal ministries, departments and agencies, recovering roughly ₦942 million in fraudulent salary payments.

ICPC Chairman Musa Aliyu told BBC Pidgin the investigation began in 2024 after irregularities surfaced in pension payments. He said senior officials in some cases enrolled relatives on payrolls to divert salaries, citing one suspect who added his wife, son and mother-in-law while also collecting 12 other fictitious employees’ pay.

The Nigeria Police Force topped the list with 570 fake workers, followed by the National Water Resources Authority with 80 and the Ministry of Works with 56. The Accountant-General’s Office and Ministry of Interior were also implicated, though exact figures weren’t disclosed as investigations continue.
