Edo State says it may sanction Chinese firm Rongtai Industries after five worker deaths in three weeks. The manufacturing firm produces a range of materials including wood, ceramics and aluminium. One staff was reportedly crushed by a forklift, another electrocuted, and a third killed in a fall from a crane.
Labour Commissioner Godwin Eshieshie, visiting the factory, called it a — quote — “complete dehumanisation,” saying workers had no helmets, boots, or safety gear.
The visit follows unrest last month, when workers and community youths razed part of the facility and torched over 20 vehicles after the forklift death. A company representative said injured workers had refused to wear safety equipment.
Eshieshie says investigations into the company’s safety protocols and workers’ welfare will be compiled into a report, which will be presented to Governor Monday Okpebholo, with sanctions likely to follow.
