Farm Produce Prices Surge Nearly 29% Amid Worsening Insecurity, Says NBS

The National Bureau of Statistics reports a 28.98% rise in farm produce prices between January and May 2025, signalling deepening distress in Nigeria’s agricultural sector.

The farm produce index climbed from 110.5 in January to 142.53 by May, with the sharpest jump—22.28%—recorded in May alone. Officials attribute the spike to escalating insecurity, particularly in food-producing regions like Benue State.

Benue, known as Nigeria’s food basket, posted a year-on-year food inflation rate of 51.8% in April, with monthly prices up 25.6%.

Analysts say widespread attacks on farmers have disrupted production and pushed prices beyond the reach of many households.

Overall inflation in Benue also climbed sharply, reaching 34.3% in April—rising 12.8% month-on-month.

The data underscores growing fears over food security and the urgent need for stability in rural farming communities across Nigeria.
