NDLEA reports major drug busts, including 101-year-old arrest

The National Drug Law Enforcement Agency says it made several major drug busts across Nigeria in the past week, including the arrest of a hundred-and-one-year-old woman.

NDLEA spokesperson Femi Babafemi said Esther Ogunmabo was arrested on August 15th in Ilisan, Ogun State, with ninety grams of cannabis in retail sachets. She told investigators she began selling drugs after her shop was destroyed by fire, and that her daughter supplied her every four days. The daughter has been arrested. Because of her age, NDLEA’s Chairman ordered Ogunmabo be granted bail and counselling instead of prosecution.

In a separate case, in Akwa Ibom State, operatives intercepted a boat carrying illicit drugs toward Cameroon on August 21st. Three suspects were arrested with more than forty-two kilograms of narcotics.

NDLEA also seized four point four billion naira worth of a synthetic cannabis called Loud, smuggled from Thailand and hidden in shipping containers at Lagos ports. It is the agency’s first such seizure from that route.
