Former Labour Party presidential candidate Peter Obi has urged Nigerian workers to use their collective strength to demand better governance. In a statement issued on Friday to mark International Workers’ Day, he called on workers to reject corruption, ethnic division, and poor leadership.
Mr Obi described workers as the backbone of the nation, saying they deserve dignity and fair rewards for their labour. He stressed that their votes and voices could help promote leadership based on competence, character, and accountability.
He also raised concerns about the national minimum wage, currently set at 70,000 naira, saying it is unevenly implemented across states and insufficient to guarantee a decent standard of living.

Mr Obi added that national development depends on the well-being and productivity of workers, warning that when workers suffer, the country’s progress is affected.
