Nigeria’s Senate is preparing legislation to formalise an annual presidential address on June 12, in honour of the country’s Democracy Day.
Senate Leader Opeyemi Bamidele revealed the proposal during a briefing with journalists on Tuesday, describing the move as a recognition of the day’s profound national significance.

According to him, the bill will also seek to designate the National Assembly complex as the official venue for future presidential inauguration ceremonies—starting, he noted, with President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s second term, should he be re-elected.
He emphasised that June 12, already marked as a national holiday, offers a fitting moment for the President to address a joint sitting of parliament and the nation.
