The United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime has called for closer collaboration with Nigeria’s Mining Marshals as concerns grow over links between illegal mining, organised crime and terrorism.
During a visit to the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps headquarters in Abuja, UNODC’s Tullio Santini praised the unit’s rising arrests and prosecutions. Officials introduced the CONNECT Initiative, a framework to disrupt financial ties between criminal networks and terrorist groups, launching in November.
Mining Marshals Commander John Attah welcomed the partnership and pushed for the unit’s formal inclusion, saying illegal mineral exploitation increasingly funds terrorism and now shapes Nigeria’s mining sector reforms.
