US Warns of Rising ISIS Threat in West Africa

The United States has warned that ISIS-linked extremist groups are resurging in parts of West Africa, the Sahel and the Lake Chad Basin, including northern Nigeria.

In a new counterterrorism strategy released on Tuesday, the US said remnants of the Islamic State had regrouped in Africa and Central Asia after being driven out of Iraq and Syria in 2017.

The report identified Boko Haram and the Islamic State West Africa Province, ISWAP, as major ISIS affiliates operating in the Lake Chad region, where they continue to control territory and attack military and civilian targets.

The United States said it would continue working with African governments through intelligence sharing and counterterrorism partnerships, while urging regional allies to take greater responsibility for security operations.
